I took terrific care to tell this story. There is so much pain wrapped up in it. And in this episode I could only tell one little slice of the modern day version of the divided island of Cyprus. But that’s what series are for! there are three more episodes in this series and the next one will take a closer look at what this all looks like today. How it feels like to live on a divided island. Episode 3 will then go deep into the north of the island, talking to Turkish Cypriots and hearing their story. Episode 4 isn’t that serious. It’s about donkeys.
There’s no way I can tell all the stories and if you are from this island you probably have a version of these stories that doesn’t fit what I’ve told here. Please just trust I tried my best.

  1. Hey friends. Thanks for being here. You’ll notice this is a long video. this is how much time I needed to really unpack the important details and emotional realities of this island and its divisions. I hope you will take the time to stick with it. To absorb. If you do, I promise you will learn and feel something. That’s why I make these videos.
Also, this was just episode 1 of 4. in the next episode I’ll show you want these lines look and feel like today. I’ll go inside the buffer zone. In Ep3 I’ll focus entirely on life in the occupied north and in episode 4 i will focus on…..donkey. Lots more to come in coming weeks. See you soon!

    • Loved all your videos, but with this one… Not so sure

You just took out Ottoman empire context too easily, no country that was with majority of christian people “lived harmoniously with Turks” – you can ask that too any country that were under the Turks: Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Greece, etc.

When Ottoman’s conquered a country – Ottoman’s would give incentives who turned Muslim, and give more pressure to people who stayed Christian (bigger taxes, etc.), boys from those countries would be kidnapped and forcibly joining Ottoman elite army Janissary every 2-3years, and family would try to hide them so they cannot get kidnapped, when people from conquered countries would protest against Ottoman’s, they would be tortured and killed, heads would be chopped and put them publicly…

There is a reason why multiple countries in Balkans were united in early 20th century to get liberated from Ottoman’s, certainly not because everybody lived harmoniously under the Ottoman’s…

    • Hey Johnny, the video isn’t long at all, we could have watched it for an hour and more too. I think the quality is amazing, the rhythm and pace keep you quite engaged. Certainly, a change from your other videos but a welcomed one! Thanks for your work mate

    • Don’t worry man.
When it comes to your videos, I can watch them for hours.

  2. Great work to watch.

  3. Remember this is a issue that does not have an simple answer. Both sides are right and wrong at the same time. This makes solving this issue very hard.

  5. Raphael David Condor

I love your work! You’re an inspiration

  6. Me seeing the British flag in the thumbnail:

Oh god what have we done now

  7. *Divide and conquer…* many great empires did this. But the British did it so effectively and repeatedly to many places.

  8. Appreciation for the wonderful music.

  9. So a western country making a shit show, reminds me of Kosovo and Metohija.
